Brown Smokey Eyes with Clinique Black Honey

I was getting tired of the same old looks I'd been creating with my LORAC PRO Palette and Laura Mercier Artist Palette lately, so I decided on a daytime, brown smokey eye today using a much loved eyeshadow I have yet to speak about on the ol' blog. I'd never been bothered to try Clinique eyeshadows before, but after I heard they reformulated the All About Shadow line and included a red-brown shade, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to dip my toes in.
Other products in this look:
Chanel Les Beiges in 30
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Dim Infusion
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in 3.5
NYX Butter Gloss in Creme Brulee
Kevyn Aucoin The Celestial Powder in Candlelight
Urban Decay 24/7 Liner in West
Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara

Clinique All About Shadow in Black Honey is a shimmery red-toned brown. It's incredibly smooth, pigmented, easy to blend and long-wearing. Admittedly, red-browns are among my favorite eyeshadow shades, especially on my warm complexion, and Black Honey is no exception. At at a cool $15, it doesn't exactly break the bank either.
Today, I'm wearing Clinique Black Honey all over my lid up to the crease with a touch of LORAC Taupe (from the PRO Palette) to transition it out. I also have a bit of Black Honey smudged into my lower lash line. After adding some Urban Decay West on my top lash line and waterline, this super simple brown smokey eye was complete.

When creating a smokey eye using predominantly one eyeshadow, it's important that the shadow you choose is good enough to stand on its own, and Black Honey certainly is. Its red undertones make it stand out, even against brown eyes, and its shimmer gives it just the right amount of dimension and visual interest to keep it from appearing flat. Pair this stunning shade with Clinique's new and fantastic formula and I think it's pretty clear why Black Honey is a current favorite!

Clinique All About Shadow in Black Honey is available from Sephora for $15.

  2. Black Honey is such a gorgeous color! Whenever I see it on someone else I love it, but when I swatch it on my self I wish it was a bit more red

  3. Hey Tiffany, while I shy away from reddish browns, this does look fantastic on you! Dim Infusion seems like the type of blush that goes with everything :)

  4. I love this on you...! People always say that red browns make you look tired/sick but I have to disagree. Mulch is one of my favorite Mac shadows, even despite not loving its texture and opacity. Looks great on brown eyes imho :) you're no exception

  8. OK I NEED BLACK HONEY! I have the Almost Lipstick in Black Honey which I hardly use (need to bust it out) but this one... I love red brown eye shadows. You look great Tiffany!

  9. Thanks, Allison! I've had that problem before with other products, so I completely understand. It's always a bit of disappointing when something looks different in person than what you expected.

  10. Thanks, Sunny! That's the feeling I get with Dim Infusion too :) How come you shy away from red-browns? I think they'd look nice on you!

  11. Thanks so much, Lindsay! I don't have Mulch myself, but from swatches I've seen, it definitely looks like the type of red-brown shade I go for. Glad you like those kinds of shades too! :)

  18. NARS Galapagos is a regular for quick makeup days and recently I did a post with NARS Coconut Grove. It gave me the lazy look I was going for :)

  19. i've read about black honey on other blogs and you recommending it too is the final push i needed to want this! i stopped by the clinique counter yesterday but seems like they don't carry black honey here. all the single shadows were blacks, whites and blues.. (?) i'll keep an eye out... hopefully they start stocking HK counters with black honey soon, it looks gorgeous on you! :)

  20. So pretty!
I am afraid of reddish brown in general (they tend to, um, make me look drunk), but this is tempting. I have Black Honey lippies and wonder if they would all play nicely together? ;) Clinique eyeshadows are surprisingly nice. I also want to try the matte violet shade.

  21. Haha I think reddish browns make me look ill!

  22. I have always been afraid of red-toned eyeshadows but this one looks lovely!

  23. It looks gorgeous on you! It really accentuates brown eyes. I've always had Clinique's Almost Lipstick in Black Honey floating around on wishlists but I hadn't seen how pretty the eyeshadow is! I'm fairly sure it costs about $36 AUD though, which is QUITE the mark-up!

  31. I think red-toned bronzes are my absolute fave! IAs usual you look perfect! I actually purchased this and cannot find it anywhere! Your post is making me want to tear apart my room. It's so funny how our tastes are so similar. I see this lineup and know it all needs to be added to my Wishlist, even though I have a few ;-) MUFE Star Powder in Bronze is another face, I think you would love it!

  32. PRETTY!!!! it really suits you and... i'm going to have to find something similar in my stash cause i'm trying my best not to buy new things but for serious..what a great color. i almost never just wear one shadow...i really should try and experiment more with my stash to see which ones work well for a one shadow look.

  33. Ooo, I have both of those! I'll have to try it sometime :)

  34. Thanks, Coco! Glad you like it :)

  35. Yay! And that's so weird about the Clinique counters. Someone else told me they couldn't find Black Honey in their country either :-/ I hope you can find it soon! I think it would look great on you :)

  36. Aww, really? Sunny said in a comment earlier that reddish browns make her look ill. I wonder why that is. I've always thought they looked great on warmer complexions with brown eyes, but who knows. Everyone's different I guess.

Surprisingly, I've never tried Clinique Black Honey lippies! I bet they would look great together though. I definitely would be open to trying more of their eyeshadows too. A matte violet sounds niiice.

  37. I completely agree with you on Clinique's take on Black Honey. I really like how each product is interpreted a bit differently. I've never tried the lipstick, but I've heard it was a best-seller too (maybe I heard it from Clinique, haha). And yes, you have to try the Butter Glosses from NYX! The formula is so moisturizing and non-sticky with the perfect amount of pigmentation :)

  38. Thanks, Laura! You should try a shade like this sometime - you might love it! :)

  39. Thank you, Cherie! You're right - $36 is quite the mark-up, and it's kind of ridiculous actually if that is in fact the case. Maybe you could try finding a similar type of shade from a more affordable line? :-/

  41. Thanks, Zoe! And don't worry - I lust over certain types of shades all the time that look AMAZING on others and terrible on me! haha.

  43. Thank you, Liz! Surprisingly, I've never tried the lipstick!

  44. Thanks, Kelly! I hope you report back if you find a dupe! I love these kinds of shades :)

  46. Oh no! I hope you find it soon! I hate when that happens. Definitely adding MUFE Star Powder in Bronze to my wishlist now! If you love it, I'm sure I would too :)

  47. Absolutely in love with this look Tiffany! Omg, the shade is so sultry and smokey on its own, its perfect for this one shadow look! And I totally need to get some of those butter glosses, I need more lipglosses in my life!

  48. Thanks, Jenn! I bet you have a similar color somewhere in your collection :) Sometimes I'm just too lazy to use more than one shade! Haha.
