My next Revisited post is My Top 5 Highlighters. The biggest change, as you may already have guessed from the title, is that I only have 3 favorites now :)
Basically, the point of these Revisited posts will be to take a look back at my top 5 picks and see if and how they've changed or stayed the same. I don't take back anything I said about any of these products because at the time, I absolutely felt that way and loved them for reasons I discussed in those posts. Some of those products I still love (products that are still in the top 5 are denoted with an * symbol) , a few not so much, and others got pushed out of my top 5 because different products took their place.
My Top 5 Highlighters as of September 2010 were:
e.l.f. Shimmer Palette
MAC MSF in Soft and Gentle
NARS Orgasm Illuminator
* Dior Amber Diamond Shimmer Star
MAC Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl (LE)
My Top 3 Highlighters as of April 2011 are:
MAC MSF in Perfect Topping (LE)
MAC Pigment in Vanilla
* Dior Amber Diamond Shimmer Star
From L to R:
MAC MSF in Perfect Topping (LE)
MAC Pigment in Vanilla
Dior Amber Diamond
As far as my previous favorites that didn't make it into my new favorites, here's why:
-I still like my e.l.f. Shimmer Palette but that's it. I like it.
-I realized that while MAC Soft & Gentle is a gorgeous color, the shimmer can be quite chunky at times and there can sometimes be fall-out.
-NARS Orgasm Illuminator was okay. It was just really, really subtle on me.
-MAC Shell Pearl is pretty but a bit overrated, in my opinion.
(Swatched in same order as above)
(Blended out)
1. MAC Perfect Topping kind of looks disappointing in the above swatches but in real life, it's a super pretty, subtle, pale peachy-pink highlight. The MSF itself is extremely finely milled and the shimmer is not chunky and does not produce any fall-out whatsoever. If anything, Perfect Topping can tend to look a bit powdery if used in excess and may look a bit ashy on darker skin tones. I like to use my MAC 188 to apply powder highlighters because it applies the perfect amount and blends it in flawlessly.
2. MAC Vanilla is, in my opinion, the most gorgeous highlighter in my entire makeup collection. It looks white in the container, but once applied to the skin and blended out, it reveals a multitude of other colors and transforms itself into what can be best described as a multi-dimensional, pale gold color. It's shimmery and can be quite dramatic and while I still like to use it during the daytime, it's the perfect highlight for nights out. I don't reach for Vanilla on days when a) I want a subtle highlight, and b) I don't feel like dealing with a potential loose powder mess.
3. Dior Amber Diamond is my favorite highlighter of the three. It's a shimmery peach with a touch of bronze, and it looks equally amazing and appropriate during the day as it does at night. The peachy bronze base helps it to blend in flawlessly with your complexion, and I can't imagine it would ever look ashy on any skin tone. Fairer skin tones may prefer to use only the lighter half, but the swatch above is of all of the shades swirled together.
Here's one last look at them blended out. I dare you to tell me Vanilla Pigment doesn't look amazing!
What are your favorite highlighters?

...aaaand Amber Diamond wins again! :) It's my favorite highlighter, I haven't found anything that tops it just yet :) Vanilla looks gorgeous though hmmm!
ReplyDeleteWow Dior Amber Diamond looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteI'm DYING over the vanilla pigment!
ReplyDeleteI love Dior Amber Diamond too - my favourite powder highlighter. I think I prefer cream or liquid types though...loving the Jemma Kidd one!
ReplyDeleteI've been seeing Vanilla used as a highlight a lot lately. I must try it! I use Soft and Gentle as well and have found the same thing, however this is after using MAC Iridescent Pressed Powder in Belightful which let me tell you, has sparkles. I haven't reached for that in a long while. I'm currently using MAC Cream Color Base in Hush and actually really like it. I'm still lusting over Amber Diamond though, that's on my list! :)
ReplyDeleteVanilla pigment looks so pretty! my favorite highlighter at the moment is Benefit's High beam :)
ReplyDeleteGreat picks for highlighters. I love the way Dior Amber Diamond Shimmer Star looks. I use MAC MSF in Warm Blend (LE) or MAC MSF in Gold Deposit as a highlight.
ReplyDeleteWhy oh why do I never think to use Vanilla Pigment as a highlighter?! Thanks for reminding us of it's awesomeness! I have to say, I am totally loving Jemma Kidd Dewy Glow--I am not the biggest fan of powder highlighters and I think Dewy Glow is to me what Amber Diamond is to many other beauty lovers. Highlighters are a fav beauty product of mine for sure!
ReplyDeleteI've been searching for Perfect Topping forever in hopes of coming across it! I can only hope that some day it will be repromoted, or I'll finally find it in a CCO: it looks so pretty!
ReplyDelete♥ Jessica
I'm a highlighter junkie, and vanilla pigment is definitely in my top 3 as well! I love the versatility of it--you can use it dry as a highlighter on cheeks/eyes/face, or mix it into lotion or foundation for a beautiful allover glow. I've never tried using it under a lip gloss, but that would probably be beautiful too! :-) I'll definitely have to try the Dior...it's been tempting me for a while and I've resisted, but that swatch is GORGEOUS!!
ReplyDelete@Heather: I want the Jemma Kidd one actually! It'll have to wait until I'm done with P10P though :)
ReplyDelete@Mitz: I've heard good things about the CCBs...I can't decide if I should try Hush, Shell, or Pearl though.
@Amy: I like High Beam too :)
@Danielle: I want the Jemma Kidd one so bad!
I have used MAC vanilla pigment as a highlighter but i do not see the hype, i much prefer pearl CCB which does not have obvious glitter :(
ReplyDeleteVanilla pigment looks amazing! Gorgeous shade.
ReplyDeleteBy Candle light is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy the Nars illuminator ( dosent last long on the skin) but while it's on my skin looks so perfect!
My favorite highlighter would have to be NARS Alabatross. It has a gold/yellow undertone that really brights up my cheek bones!
ReplyDelete@EllysMakeupBag: Really? I don't really find Vanilla glittery at all - just really shimmery. I want to try Pearl CCB, though!
ReplyDeleteI actually don't own any on your list. I use MAC's Hush cream colour base and I love it. :) x
ReplyDeletevery awesome highlighters!!! <3
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteVery nice highlighter selections! Dior Amber Diamond looks gorgeous! "Glint" from Illamasqua bronzing duo and MAC Stereo Rose are my absolute favorites right now! :)
I can't believe I still do not own Amber Diamond. I need to buy this asap. I agree with you that shell is a bit overated. :)
ReplyDelete'Perfect Topping' looks lovely! I love MAC 'Vanilla' pigment, but only started using it again recently. I think it's great for both warm and cool skintones since it's golden with a touch of pink. The next hightlighter I will be buying is 'Centre Stage' from Fyrinnae - it's so subtle, giving a healthy glow (the rest of my highlighters are pretty dramatic!)
ReplyDeleteI want Amber Diamond now! :-) I love Soft & Gentle and I sure definitely need to test Vanilla pigment, I have it and I never use it, so it's time to use it as a highlighter!
ReplyDeleteAhhh, gotta love that Amber Diamond! It's a beauty! You know, one of my all-time favorite highlighters is the Bonne Bell Glimmer Bronze in Gold n' Glitz (it comes in two colors)...I've honestly used it since high school (10 years now..eeek!) It's a gorgeous loose powder with a fine golden sheen. It's tied with Amber Diamond for me :) Plus, it's cheap!
ReplyDeleteHehe, the swatches and the comments dont lie - Amber Diamond is one of the best highlighters in the market!!!
ReplyDeleteVery tempted to try out Vanilla (shocking that I don't own it, no?) after this too!!!
Lovely post dear! :)
You said in ur post that vanilla pigment is "the most gorgeous highlighter in your entire collection", but later you said that "amber diamond is [your] favorite highlighter of the three, which contradicts the previous statement.
ReplyDeleteI could see how it would seem contradictory, but what I meant was that vanilla pigment really is the prettiest and most unique highlighter of the bunch for the reasons I mentioned above, but amber diamond is still my favorite because it's the easiest to use for everyday purposes and is great for both day and night (whereas I prefer vanilla pigment for night time on me) because it has just the right amount of shimmer and isn't too over the top.
